After the runaway success of her new and improved pie shop, Mrs. Lovett excitedly tells a distracted Sweeney about her plans for a future together. The garishly colorful scenes are a fun break from all the dark and gory depictions of London, and the bold costumes prove that all Tim Burton movies require that someone at some point be wearing a ridiculous amount of stripes. Joanna Lumley portrayed Mrs. Lovett in the 1998 Showtime television movie The Tale of Sweeney Todd starring Ben Kingsley. Her character has a romantic relationship with him, as opposed to the unrequited attraction depicted in most versions of the story. She is additionally—and with the implied consent of Todd—sexually involved with a local judge, to whom she provides sadomasochistic release. She is arrested for her crimes in the end. Pair a super-glam ruched swimsuit with a pair of scalloped high-waisted shorts for a retro look (plus, since it’s a one-piece, you could totally pass it off as a top). Then slip on a pair of red sandals for a pop of color. A dramatic straw hat, circular sunglasses, and an ornate beach towel resemble Mrs. Lovett’s fantasy outfits. Get ready to turn heads while you’re down by the beautiful sea! What did you think?

In 1979 the acclaimed Tony-Award winning Broadway Musical “ Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” by Stephen Sondheim, gave the character a much deeper personality and depicted him even more as the demon he always intended to be. Challenge… trying to keep Sweeney from the truth. Though he was told his wife poisoned herself, she survived and became the beggar woman who frequents around the pie shop. But Mrs. Lovett wants Todd all to herself. Her pie shop has become a hit since she’s added the “secret ingredient” of body parts, and she doesn’t want any rivals for her new hero. A good costume is really about a great silhouette. So if you can create a great costume through that with colour and shape, people will get the picture” -Colleen Atwood First appearing in the Victorian penny dreadful serial The String of Pearls, it is debated if she was based on an actual person or not. In Stephen Sondheim's 1979 stage musical Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Tim Burton's 2007 film adaptation, Todd pays a visit to Mrs. Lovett's pie shop below his old home after 15 years in exile, seeking information about his lost family. Mrs. Lovett recognizes him as her former tenant, Benjamin Barker, with whom she was (and is) secretly in love. She informs him that his wife, Lucy, was sexually abused by Judge Turpin, who had exiled Todd on a false charge, and informs Todd that Lucy was so distraught that she poisoned herself with arsenic. Seeking vengeance, Todd reopens his shaving parlour above the shop, and slits the throats of his customers. Mrs. Lovett initiates a plan for Todd to send the corpses of his victims down a chute that leads to her bakehouse. She then uses the flesh to bake meat pies, which make her business very successful.
